Hello, I’m Anita!

I’m Anita Guajardo, a bilingual, Spanish-speaking, first-generation Latina, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and EMDR-Trained psychotherapist based in Austin, Texas.

Add in an expressive talking style, a baseball cap for most outings, and some smiles.

Bits of Joy:

Chats with family and friends alongside comfort food fill my heart and belly. I often turn to music and exercise to clear my mind or transition between parts of my day. Being surrounded by books and soft lighting is comforting. Lavender bubble tea with honey tastes like a mini spa retreat. And avocado slices on a freshly-made flour tortilla connect me to childhood.

Bits of Journey:

I love working with high-achievers because I can relate. As the first-born child of an immigrant couple, I know how we can take worry and stress-energy and channel it towards “doing.” Which is great, right? Unless the stress-energy keeps on even after we’ve reached our goals.

It can feel like a constant chase after something we can't quite put our finger on. Sometimes we're just used to this rhythm, and it's all we’ve ever really known. Or, we can know exactly what experience we're after but get distracted. We miss the signs “you’ve made it,” “it's okay to slow down,” “celebrate and enjoy.”

In my therapeutic work, I have found that some stories of over-functioning are rooted in scarcity, necessity, and trauma. These are not always our own stories but those of previous generations. We can inherit our ancestor's beliefs, behaviors, and stress-energy. Particularly in families that have seen many hardships, “keep moving” energy can ripple through generations.

Okay, so how about some good news?

We can change the habit of a go-go-go pace and welcome some balance. We can use self-awareness to start and follow with intentional and healthier responses for our internal and external worlds. If trauma is present, we can use trauma-focused methods for healing like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which helps release trauma captured in mind, body, and internal narrative.

Brain science tells us we are capable of creating and strengthening new habits. Plus, I've witnessed it repeatedly in my years working as a bilingual counselor at a non-profit agency. It's not always easy, but we can get there with the right tools, support, and motivation. As we heal past wounds, strengthen self-awareness and self-understanding, and bring intentionality to our choices, we begin to enjoy more in life. We can engage and connect more intimately, play, laugh, create, tune into experiences big and small, and then that becomes our story.

So Ilumina Counseling came to be!

“Ilumina” is Spanish for both “enlighten” and “illuminate” and represents my view of my role as a social worker and therapist.

My light meets yours in our time working together to help you be a brighter, more resilient light in the world.

And we need bright lights out there.

My Approach to Therapy:

I see therapy as a journey together. I have tools, information, and creative tidbits. You bring the keys to your world and the vision for our work together. You can also bring a snack.

Our work is collaborative, holistic, culturally conscious, recognizes the science of our interconnected mind, body, and relationship experiences, and considers the systems you're navigating in the world. We’ll map out clear and attainable goals to guide and keep us on track. Empowerment and resourcefulness are constant themes, so we’ll be using the strengths and skills you have. I'll also help you discover strengths and internal resources you may have overlooked.

My role depends on what you need. Weaving together imagery, creativity, psychoeducation, practicality, and hands-on tools is my therapeutic jam. I have strategies for rewriting internal stories causing present-day struggles and updating any outdated and faulty lines in the “life rules of engagement” book. I have a knack for spinning negative situations into opportunities (when appropriate). So, you need a positive reframe? Let's spin. If you need some humor, I got you. When you need to go deeper, process, and heal, I'll be right alongside.

Laughter, crying, and raw honesty are all welcomed. The different parts of who you are, parts you're proud of, parts creating disruption, and those that may have fallen back, let's get them all on board because that is therapy centered on YOU. All of you. That's the most effective and sustainable approach I’ve found to be useful for over ten years.
